Good stop on the way to Oban Sep 03, 2010
Taynuilt is on the A85 some miles before Oban. We stayed at a very good B&B there and wondered what we should do in the afternoon. We had seen a sign for Bonawe Ironworks and decided to ake a look.

The site of the ironworks is splendid, close to Glen Etive.Surprisingly the iron ore was brought by sea from Cumbria to the area with a lot of charcoal. This was the fuel used in 1753 before the use of coke later that century.

There is a visitor Centre and by looking there and in the old buildings, it is possible to get a very god idea of the old workings.
