Bombay Beach Vacation Guide
Bombay Beach is a little square of scattered houses, trailers (many abandoned), boat launch ramp, and sand pile nestled on the eastern shore of the beautiful Salton Sea, one of the saltiest bodies of water in North America. Known for it's dead fish covered beaches, clouds of flies, and sunny, 120-degree days, this is a summer holiday Mecca.
Sometimes tens of thousands of birds succumb to the toxic waters of the Sea and pile up on the shore, driven by the howling winds that can sandblast your car clean in minutes. An excellent chance to get a close-up look at wildlife.
The southern half of the town was inundated by the rising level of the Salton Sea associated with excessive agricultural waste runoff, but the good news is that the water has receded in recent years, leaving many of the the rotting, salt-encrusted trailers and buildings exposed. Sort of an urban renewal. Another thing the town has going for it is that it's over 200 feet below sea level and only a short walk from one of the more active sections of the San Andreas Fault, a world-class earthquake hazard!
A number of these "seaside resorts" were built back in the 1950s when the Salton Sea was a more pleasant place, still freshwater with world class fishing. Slab City, Truckhaven, and Salton City are other examples of this abandoned paradise.

Well, having failed the first time, we were back at Dos Palmas Oasis to try again to map the marsh. This time, we also had the task of monitoring Salt Creek, home of Desert Pupfish, a little endangered fish that somehow survives in the saltiest, hottest, most toxic waters in the desert. It's a t…

While North Shore is abandoned, Bombay Beach, another failed resort town to the south, remains as sort of post apocalyptic trailer park. The infrastructure has been taken over by various desert dwellers who have cobbled together houses and homesteads usually built around the hulk of an original tr…
