Bombay Backpackers Hostel May 28, 2017
Bombay Backpackers Hostel was one of the few affordable places in Mumbai. It was really strange for me that such a huge city does not have an extensive network of guest houses and hostels. But, after I explored the city a bit, it was bit clear why people do not stuck around… Mumbai is INCREDIBLY dirty and traffic congested place, where noise pollution is an actual fact instead of only being an expression for something loud and constant… Stench of the river close to the hostel is incredible. Actually that liquid that slowly moves down to the sea is definitely not a water. It is something dark, oily, dead, with all kind of floatable materials making it harder to look at.

I have chosen this hostel because of its proximity to the airport and train station. I gave myself few days to experience this big Indian city. Train station is 20 min away walking, and it is safe to say that is the fastest way to get there. Tuk Tuk drivers are suicidal and they would bring you there only few minutes earlier, but you will lose 2 years of your life due to the stress. It took my driver 25 minutes to get to the airport, which is some 10 km away.

Hostel does not look nice from outside. It is located in the first floor of the building, right on the very busy road. Few rooms are facing that street and the only way to lower the noise of cars honking is to put the AC on… The space in the hostel is very limited. They have very small kitchen that also doubles for the main door and small sitting area around the TV. What surprised me a bit was the “smoking room” inside the living room. It was by all means surreal to make limited space even smaller. People indulging their smocking habit could easily do it outside.

Good part of everything being tight is that you meet everyone ahhahah. And there were some cool characters in this place.

All restrooms are in the hallway and you’ll get in pretty fast. Looks like this hostel is full of travelers that like basic things. Showers are clean and modern. That was good change after few weeks of India “standards”. Dorm room had 6 beds, a bit small but not too bad. With everyone’s bags, there is no much space to move around. Every bunk bed has lockers on the bottom and you can lock them with your own lock. Rooms are labeled as transportation, and I was in the TAXI room. AC works well, and it is refreshing change from the hot and humid Mumbai.

Breakfast is included, and it is really good. They make local food that is different every morning. Staff is really great and interested to help or instruct.

There is security present at all times, but this place still looks a bit sketchy. Generally speaking it is not a horrible place to crash, but I would test some other option next time I am around.
