Splendid castle - masses of history Nov 23, 2010
Forget any feeling of absurdity at a castle called 'Bolton Castle' being in a place called 'Castle Bolton.' Both the castle and the place have held their names a long time. Castle Bolton is between Wensleydale and Swaledale.

It was built in the 14th century and was in the hands of the Scrope family who remained powerful through the Wars of the Roses and the religious conflicts of the Tudor Times.

During the Civil War the then Scrope tried unsuccessfully to hold it for the king. Parliament held it for a time and then had part demolished to make it impossible to defend.

Even so, only part is ruined and the main part is still used for weddings.
