Bollesje-Gefängnis-Restaurant Rudesheim am Rhein Reviews
Aug 06, 2006
Bollesje-Gefängnis-Restaurant is somewhat of an oddity as it seems to be themed as an American prison in the 1920s!! We couldn't work out if it had once been the town jail or whether this was some wacky Germanic humour but either way it seems an odd theme!!
Situated in the square at the base of the cable car it's quite small and compact and perhaps a little dingy with a bar and a couple of areas surrounded by bars (of the metal kind) which presumably are the prison cells. There are plenty of photos of parties all dressed in prison outfits presumably having all sorts of prison themed fun in a hen party sort of way so if it's quite refined eating you’re after in the evenings then it's probably not the place for you.
It does have a large open roof terrace which is ideal for sunny days as you can watch the hustle and bustle of the busy Rudesheim streets below you. The terrace is traditionally decorated (complete with an odd looking stuffed badger on the end of the bar carrying a spear (no - we couldn't work that out either) and has open roof beams entwined with vines to afford some shade on hotter days.
We've eaten out on the terrace during the day and it was thankfully devoid of anything that could be described as "zany" or "wacky" fun so that was OK!!
The food was excellent, appearing quickly and was reasonably priced and can be washed down with a selection of local beers and wines. The flammkuchen is exceptional and well worth a try - particularly the vegetarian option made with feta and chilli peppers!!
All in all worth a visit if you want a bite to eat after a trip on the Seilbahn but likely to be noisily touristy in the evenings - which is fine if you like that sort of thing.
