La espera interminable
posted by:
Jan 27, 2007 - Feb 21, 2007

Day 8-9. Motorbike town of Guyaramerin
posted by:
Jun 14, 2007 - Aug 14, 2007
Once we got our tickets from Guyaramirim to La Paz we were so happy that we are going to be out of this shithole soon. It almost seemed to good to be true. And so it happened... when we were already at the airport our flight got cancelled like half an hour before the scheduled departure and we were put on a 8am flight on the following day but were supposed to reconfirm at 8am at the airport.Of course the 8 o`clock flight was all smoke and mirrors. When we arrived at the airport at 8 we…

La Paz and a bus ride from hell
posted by:
Jul 06, 2007 - Aug 22, 2007
My travel partner and I took a bus from the Bolivian border town of Villazon to La Paz.  After the 27 hour bus ride we took to get to Bolivia, we figured another 19 hours would be easy... in the end it turned out to be one of the most horrific traveling experiences, but hey.. thats what backpacking is all about sometimes.  The roads frrom Vallazon were pretty much just windy dirt roads that lasted for about 15 hours of the trip.. At one point the bus had a flat tire in the middle of…

Crossing the Border to Bolivia
posted by:
Aug 21, 2007 - Feb 15, 2008
Crossing the border into Bolivia was a rather anti-climactic affair. For days, travellers heading south had regaled me with horror stories of bag searches and 12 hour waits and guide books that I borrowed advised me not to cross alone. I was a bit nervous. I was quickly running out of territory in Argentina and I had yet to find somebody (anybody) to enter Bolivia with. Then a miracle happened. Marie-Claude and I returned from our trip to the Salinas Grandes to find our new room mate, Susanne…

Braving Bolivia...

We travelled into Bolivia on a 4 day 4WD tour of high altitude lakes and the amazing Uyuni salt flat.  It was a tough way in, with the first 2 days over 4300m and -15 degrees, staying in dorms with no heating, no showers and only 2 toilets shared by at least 40 people (many with Bolivian belly!).   But the stunning scenery made it more than worth it - high altitude lakes coloured electric blue, yellow or red from the minerals, filled with pink flam…

Slept in, relaxed and went to the Convento de San Francisco, which has an amazing view of the city atop a tower on the red spanish tiled roof.  There are still 10 monks who still live thir and teach at the school next door.  The art surrounding the courtyard was amazing, huge paintings depicting the life of Saint Francisco.  We then went down to the catacombs where the monks were buried along with some of the towns richest members.  The room was pretty small, made complete…

Well we left salta on our midnight bus, it was shit! my footrest and seat recliner were broken off, de had a leak on top of her, the bus stoped every half hour and turned lights on etc. anywho we got to la quinca on the argentinian side of the border about 7am. walked to the actual border crossing and walked through imigration fairly easily. villazon on the bolivian side was like a totally differenty world even though only 50 meters from argentina. we got on a bus fairly quickly from there to…

La Paz
posted by:

We decided as our bus drove into La Paz that we were staying more than 1 night. It is an amazing city, built on the steep cliffs of a valley, the lowest point of the city being about 3600m above sea level. Most of the time you are walking on a steep up or downhill and the first few days see you being out of puff almost constantly. Because we had been travelling nonstop for 2 days to get from the Pantanal to La Paz, we decided that the 1st day was one in which to relax and do absolu…
