Boat ride from Alleppey to Kottayam by govt. ferry Reviews
Cheapest way to get a quick feel of Kerala backwaters Sep 15, 2009
While on my way from Trivandrum to Cochin, I dropped at Alleppey. Bought a ferry ticket for Kottayam for about 20 cents (INR 10). I was actually stunned as I had never thought that it would be this cheap.
The ferry started at about 11:30 am. Only a few of the passengers were tourists and rest all were local commuters. Looking at their bags I sensed that these folks do their shopping at Alleppey and carry the stuff to their home situated in backwaters.
Within a few minutes, we left the Alleppey jetty behind. Initially, we came across a large number of houseboats which were parked in the backwaters area near the jetty. May be the houseboats were resting (since it was kinda off season) and getting geared for the upcoming season!!
There are many houses on either side of the water road. There are other establishments such grocery shops, churches/temples, post offices, etc. too. The ferry would have stopped at about 15-20 places (or water stations, I would say). I was amazed to see how people live at such places. The commuters were quite adept in quickly getting down from or getting into the ferry.
After a while, we could see only water and coconut trees all around. This is something which is really worth watching and experiencing. Undoubtedly, it was the best part of the journey.
Then came a smaller water road (something similar to a small canal) where houses were much closer to either side of the ferry. There were few small over bridges. The person at the bridge used to pull the bridge over so that ferry could go from beneath the bridge.
The ferry was a bit noisy and slow. It took about 3 to 4 hours for us to reach Kottayam.
But overall, it was a pretty good experience. This is recommended to those who do not want to hire an expensive house boat and but still want to get a QUICK feel of Kerala backwaters.
