Boat Tour of the Harbour Feb 19, 2017
The harbour of Emden is not as big as the one in, say, Hamburg. Anyway, when you are there doing a boat tour is worthwhile.

The harbour is an important part of Emden's economy and life and going by boat is the only way to see and understand it. Nordseewerke shipyard, the largest company in the port, seems to be balancing on the edge of bankruptcy every year until they get another big order and are on top of the world again. They build container vessels as well as war ships and submarines for the German military.

These harbour cruises are advertised as "tours from a duck's perspective". The boats are extremely flat so that they fit under the bridges. From this point of view close to water level, big ships, docks look even more impressive.

The huge cranes in the outer port look most spectacular from the water. They appear almost like giant animals. Somehow I could not help wondering whether they had eben designed by a surrealist like Salvador Dali.

Hint for photographers: The majority of the seats is indoors behind windows and does not offer good photo options. There are about a dozen outdoor seats in the back of the boat which are much better (I got one of those). Try to get hold of one of those but take care. Since you sit a bit higher there, these require keeping your head VERY low when passing underneath the railway bridges!!
