It's tragic how expensive some activities in New Zealand are. If they're not expensive, then they're free- it's a strange phenomenon I've only seen there. But the sounds along the southwest coast of NZ's South Island are definitely worth it. There is a good price range in boat excursions, and there are also flights that take you up over the sounds for an incredible view (so the rich travellers say).

Also: try an overnight excursion to Doubtful sound if you have the extra cash. You take a boat out over Lake Manapouri, hike a bit, then find yourself completely isolated in what every brochure calls the 'Sound of Silence.'

Imagine mountains rising without warning out of the sea- or sheer cliffs that plunge straight into the water. Imagine these mountains are made of pure rock so that, when it rains, the water can't seep into the ground and instead flows off the cliffsides, forminghundreds and hundredsof waterfalls. In fact, I've been out in Milford Sound in both rain and sun and I'm tempted to say it's even better in the rain.

The only way to reach Milford is via Te Anau from the south, and you drive through what I believe is sub-tropical rainforest. In any case, it's beautiful :) Halfway through you'll have to go through the Homer Tunnel, carved out of pure granite and over a thousand metres long. You emerge atthe other end and wind your way down surrounded by sheer cliffs on either side. When it's raining (as it usually is on NZ's West Coast), you'll be lucky enough to see lots of waterfalls streaming down.

Once you get out onto the water look for yellow-eyed penguins, dolphins, and seals. Be ready to be awed off your feet ^_^
