Bo-Bi Bar Copenhagen Reviews
The combination of an American bar and the hour long drinking culture of the Danes Jun 05, 2010
Bo-Bi Bar is a very small bar in the centre of Copenhagen. It is a cozy place with a long history and a place where Danish writers, artists are known to hang out. It was also a place that I many years ago as a student spent some time in. You can only get beers in a bottle and there are not many choices of beer to choose from; I think they have three different kinds and the most sold fynsk bryg from Refsvindinge. If you want something to eat you can always have a hardboiled egg from the bar.
The story goes that a sailor back in 1917 bought a board for a bar in Copenhagen inspired by a visit to the States and used it to open Bo-Bi Bar. It was already then a place where artists and journalists walk into.
The bar has had the same owner since 1977 and there has not been changed anything since the opening of the bar in 1917. The red lamps and wallpaper is still intact, and the same as when the sailor came back from New York and decided to open the bar.
Bo-Bi Bar was the first American bar in Copenhagen; a long room dominated by a bar. The dark atmosphere makes it very easy to talk with other people and it is a bar constructed far from the common French or Italian design where you shortly stop for a beer or a coffee.
This is a place where the combination of an American bar and the hour long drinking culture of the Danes made a good match. Bo-Bi Bar has therefore also been the centre piece in a couple of Danish movies like The Blue Monk from 1998 and especially Reconstruction from 2003; a movie that received "Caméra d'or" on the Cannes Film Festival 2003.
