Blue Owl Restaurant & Bakery Kimmswick Reviews
Go for the Pie! Jan 07, 2013
I had been told about the Blue Owl a few years ago, before the restaurant was featured on the Travel Channel, Food Network, and most recently, in Oprah's magazine. The quaint restaurant is located in Kimmswick, Missouri, just outside of St. Louis. The address at 2nd and Mill Street is best found by GPS, unless you are familiar with the area. (I was not). There are signs that pointed the way along the road, but it was helpful to have turn by turn directions.
The Blue Owl has an impressive menu of home-cooked meals like gourmet sandwiches, entrees and salads. The food is good, but the real reason to come here is for the dessert. They have a pie menu out of this world! There must be 50 different varieties, a dozen or so, available to choose from each day. I got the French Silk Pie and it was to die for. So creamy and delicious! My sister got their signature pie, the levee-high apple pie. She said it was good, but really what was impressive about it is how high it is stacked. It is named after the levee that protected Kimmswick during the river flood of 1993.
I can't say enough about how friendly the waitresses were. We had never been there before, but they treated us like regulars. The Blue Owl is closed on Mondays, but open everyday otherwise. They also have special occassion meals like Mother's Day Brunch or breakfast with Santa.
It may be a little out of the way, but I highly recommend eating (especially dessert!) at the Blue Owl. Seriously -- if the Deen Brothers and Oprah recommend it, how can you go wrong?
