Blue Elephant Bangkok Reviews
Authentic Thai Food and good service Oct 03, 2011
I recently visited this restaurant with a large group of friends who were visiting from Australia. They chose the restaurant online, based on several awards it has won in the last few years.
We booked a table in advance as we had a big group - we arrived early and the table was already ready. We sat upstairs in the restaurant - be careful on the wooden stairs though, they felt a little slippery. We had 3 taxi's of people arriving, so whilst we were waiting, they offered us drinks, and brought in extra chairs so we could wait downstairs for the rest of our group.
The ambiance is very nice - candles on the tables, chandeleirs hanging high above, lots of green ferns and plants, and Thai artifacts on the walls.
Staff were very attentive. We were given drinks menu first, but they wouldn't allow us to see the food menu until we had ordered drinks. I suggest trying the lychee martini, big servings in over-sized glasses. They also made sure our water glasses never went empty, and were quick to offer us more rice.
Food - we ordered the set menu, at almost 2000baht per person, which includes a selection of entree's and mains. Desert was not included. All the dishes were authentic Thai, including fish, tofu, chicken, vegetarian, prawns, soup, and both brown rice and jasmine rice. There was only a small serving of each per person, but with all the dishes, a very satisfying meal. The chef also sent out a complimentary dish at the beginning of our meal - soup and fruit. It was interesting to say the least. The presentation of the food was also amazing!! Small touches on every plate made it look so much more inviting! A friend I was with was also allergic to nuts, seafood and fish sauce, and the chefs had no problem catering to his allergy needs.
The Blue Elephant is expensive in terms of Thai restaurants, but when comparing to Western countries, very affordable.
Apparently there is also a dress code, with men expected to wear full length pants, but nothing was said to us - maybe they are not so strict these days.
Great location, easy to find and well known by most taxi drivers. Right outside the Surasak BTS Station. Restaurant staff also hailed serveral taxi's for us upon our departure, and gave the women in our group flowers as a parting gift.
Definitely a must try when visiting Bangkok.
