Bike & Build provides young adults with the opportunity to participate in a cross-country bike trip across the US to raise awareness for affordable housing. My route cycled from Virginia Beach, VA to Cannon Beach, OR (5/15/08-7/25/08). Once a week, we traded our bikes in for hammers and helped with Habitat for Humanity or another affordable housing organization. It was, by far, the greatest travel experience I have ever had.

I left around 8 AM on Friday, taking the back road Route 28 to avoid rush hour traffic. It took me an hour to get to Frederick, where I gassed up and plugged in my laptop to the power outlet for some tunes. After about an hour and a half, the computer shut down. I assumed I hadn't plugged it in…
