Bled Vacation Guide

Blejsko Jezero (Lake Bled) is nestled within a rim of mountains and surrounded by forests, with a castle on one side and a promenade beneath stately chestnut trees on the other. Horse-drawn carriages clip-clop along the promenade while swans glide on the water. On a minuscule island in the middle of the lake the lovely Cerkov svetega Martina (St. Martin's Pilgrimage Church) stands within a circle of trees. Take a ride over to the island on a pletna, an old-fashioned canopied wooden boat similar to a Venetian gondola. Bled is small enough to cover on foot; a walk around the lake won't take much longer than an hour or two.
Walking and coaching trails around the lake, traditional boats, ringing the island’s wishing bell, the castle treasures, the nearby ski pistes, mountain trails, golf courses, hunting, fishing, the casino, congress facilities – all these are but fragments of Bled’s attraction, which is truly worth experiencing. And don't forget to try local sweet called Kremsnita, the bes you can get at Šmon's.

Bled Castle in the past: Probably the first Romanesque tower of castle stood there since 1004, when the German Emperor Henrik II gave the Bled estate to Bishop Albuin of Brixen as a gift. Tower was protected by walls facing the slope of the castle hill. In the late middle Ages more towers were b…

Blue, Sian, Chris, Issac and I hopped on a bus and made a day trip out to Lake Bled a beautiful lake with crystal clear water and surrounded by the alps in the background. The center of the lake has a tiny island with a beautiful church and, had I not visited this place in person, I would have thou…

“Bled? That sounds a bit gruesome,” said Jodie when I first suggested the idea of visiting the small town in Slovenia, the most northerly of the former Yugoslavian republics. We were sat by the pool in Poreč, Croatia, and I’d just found out that a coach could pick us up outside the hotel and…
