Bled Castle in the past: Probably the first Romanesque tower of castle stood there since 1004, when the German Emperor Henrik II gave the Bled estate to Bishop Albuin of Brixen as a gift. Tower was protected by walls facing the slope of the castle hill. In the late middle Ages more towers were built and improved. Castle got his today appearance in Baroque period when other complexes were built. These are situated around two courtyards: the lower one containing outbuildings and the upp...

Bled, Slovenia - Simply Breathtaking!
posted by:

“Bled? That sounds a bit gruesome,” said Jodie when I first suggested the idea of visiting the small town in Slovenia, the most northerly of the former Yugoslavian republics. We were sat by the pool in Poreč, Croatia, and I’d just found out that a coach could pick us up outside the hotel and take us on a guided day trip to the alpine town of Bled.    “I know, but the place looks stunning. And it’s really close to Croatia,” I answered. “There’s a lake and a castle n...

Lake Bled
posted by:

Blue, Sian, Chris, Issac and I hopped on a bus and made a day trip out to Lake Bled a beautiful lake with crystal clear water and surrounded by the alps in the background. The center of the lake has a tiny island with a beautiful church and, had I not visited this place in person, I would have thought it only existed in fairy tales. We hiked alongside the lake and arrived a small "beach". I say beach only in the most general sense, because it was just a small patch of grass next to the lake fi...

We train today to Ljubljana, Slovenia where we pick up a car and drive to Bled, Slovenia.  Apparently in this area of Europe, they RELALY don't let you pick up a car in one area and drop in another because the fees for doing so are upwards of $280! - hence, the reason for getting a different/new car in Slovenia than the one we had in Croatia.  ;)  What a pain...Well, picking up our car wasn`t a problem and on we drove to Bled.  The next day, we drove Vsrič Pass, which is ...

Bled. Wow. Thats what the travel books say and its just as picturesque as they make out. The best thing though is that it also has a massive amount of outdoor things to do there. We arrived in Bled feeling pretty average after a night out in Ljubljana. However the picturesque Bled quickly turned us around and got us out walking around the Lake. The town of Bled in situated on a lake that is just magnificent, the water is a rich blue colour, a nice castle proped on top of a hill, a church on...

Slovenian countryside

Just spent a day and a night here. Wandered around the lake and up to the castle which has a good view from the fortress and a cafe selling cold beer! In the evening consulted my LP guidebook for a pub to visit and sure enough when I walked in there were several other tourists with their copies of LP on the table. Met 2 nice girls from the US and passed a pleasant evening discussing travel plans over a drink.

...Leaving Bosnia I passed through Republicka Serbia. Here I was severely grilled by a gnarly border guard who looked liked he'd gutted and devoured people for lesser crimes than being alone, at winter, in a very foreign land, looking too young and stupid to substantiate a claim to be an engineer, travelling with no real purpose. A passport photo with hair down to your waist doesn’t help either...I spent one more night in Zagreb in Hrvatska, catching up again with a gang of students I'd met...

New Year in spendiferous snowy Bled

And so it was... the end of the year that was 2007, a year that seemed to have more than its fair share of births, deaths, marriages, tragedies and comedies. Spent the last two days of it in absolute bliss in Bled, a town of 6000 local people (as well as every Italian, Austrian, Slovenian and Croatian who"s got the sense to have a holiday house here!) that"s up north in Slovenia quite close to the Austrian border. Essentially, it"s a lake about the size of Lake Wendouree for my Ballarat bud...

Christmas in the snow
posted by:
Dec 24, 2005 - Dec 28, 2005
Last Christmas, standing in the disappointing half a millimetre of snow in Copenhagen, Ness was promised lots and lots of snow the next year. Next year had come, so we thought heading up in to the Alps might be a fairly reliable way to find some of the pretty white stuff. Our trip there however didn't go entirely to plan! We flew with Ryanair for what will we hope be the last time to Trieste in northern Italy. Aaron was 95% sure we needed to get to Gorizia, on the border of Slovenia, in orde...

I spent 8 months in Bosnia on a research fellowship for graduate school. It was a great experience and I got to travel around the region quite a bit. I'd highly recommend the Balkans if you are looking for adventure, hospitality, great food. It is also gentle on your wallet. Enjoy the photos.

Where to now?

Although we didnt know about Slovenia until recently, when we started doing a bit of research, one region was repeatedly described as very beautiful, the Julian Alps in the northeast of the country. When we left Ljubljana, we hopped on a bus to take us to the small town of Bled, next to an alpine lake of the same name. Fresh off the bus, we set out to look for the hostel when a lady came up to us and offered to drive us to her guesthouse. We figured we didnt have much to lose so we hopped in....
