Perhaps one of the most photographed buildings in Riga is the wonderful HOUSE OF BLACKHEADS - MELNGALVJU NAMS. Personally, I took many photos as I just couldn't get enough of it.

Located in Town Hall Square at Ratslaukums 7, the original House of Blackheads was built in 1334, in the 14th century. Built as a meeting venue for different social organizations. In the 17th century, its sole occupants were mainly single German merchants - the Blackhead Society.

The building was severely damaged and pillaged during World War II. Completely rebuilt from 1995 to 1999 as an exact replica of the original building, with a Dutch Renaissance facade.

With more than 693,000 inhabitants, RIGA is the largest city of Latvia and also its capital. The city lies on the Gulf of Riga, at the mouth of the Daugava River.

Riga was founded in 1201 and its historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and noted for its Art Nouveau and 19th century wooden architecture. Riga is also the 2014 European Capital of Culture.

Riga is compact enough to be traversed on foot and to me that is the only way to see Riga.

As you stroll through Riga's Old Town's cobblestone streets you will discover numerous elegant buildings including: Three brothers - House of Blackheads - St. Peter's Church - Dome Cathedral Powder Tower and the House of the Cat.

Riga is also one of the most prominent Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) centers in the world, with over 800 buildings erected in that style. Some real gems can be found in and around Alberta Iela and Elizabetes Iela.

No wonder Riga draws thousands of travelers from around the world, including about 40 members of our Virtual Tourist Group.

Blackheads House Apr 28, 2013
Blackheads House history goes quite far away.First it was built in year 1334.It has been reconstructed on numerous occasions. It was completely ruined in Second World War.

Rebuilt in only year 1999.Blackheads house location is near Occupation museum black building. In front of Blackheads building there as statute of Roland.Rebuilt at year 2000!Statute of Roland represents the symbol of free medieval towns. Now it's main attraction for tourists and even locals.Because inside of building there interesting things to see.Such as huge pictures in big golden frames, sculptures etc...!

Entrance fee is 2ls,it's worth to visit,if you like museums.

P.S.Photos of underground floor, next time i visit will put photos of 1st floor :)

Stunning!!! Jun 02, 2010
Absolutely stunning both inside and out. It's a 14th Century building which was destroyed during the war and then rebuilt in the early 2000's. It's a museum which is in the square - and is close to everything :)
