Black Sheep Inn Reviews
A home away from (American) home? Jul 23, 2009
The Black Sheep Inn sounds great when you read the guidebook or their web page, but I found it a real disappointment when I got there and so did several other people I met who had been. This is a shame because it is in a good location and the owners have made a huge effort to make it "the place to stay" in Chugchilan. Sadly, everything is micro-managed and you have to want to be in a very American environment in order to enjoy the experience. I stayed in the bunkhouse and it was the worst (narrowest, uncomfortable and most expensive!) bed I had in the whole of Ecuador. The compost toilets are fun, with amazing views and the food is good (but not fantastic compared to lots of better meals I had elsewhere). I checked out after only one night and went to stay in town for half the price at a locally run hostel.

The road was in pretty good shape considering that it's in the middle of nowhere and not too many people live out here. The driver was relatively sane (apparently most drivers… Black Sheep Inn |

We also visited the Black Sheep Inn resident llamas and sheep. Black Sheep Inn has a number of black and white sheep, llamas, chickens, ducks, pigs, etc. One of the llamas ran up to us and nibbled our palms in search of salt and treats.

We were talking today with Andy, the co-owner of the Black Sheep Inn. He was telling us about the local highschool´s senior project. The students are raising 150+ trees for a reforestation project. Then he asked if we wanted to help. With our background´s how could we refuse?
The project… A tree nursery and the (almost) cheese factory |

I kind of feel like I'm setting myself up for a fall though, first the fantastic Secret Garden hostel in Quito, now the Black Sheep Inn has set the standard pretty high for accommodation in South America. The hostel is located wayyyy up the hill and just has a great atmosphere and really friendly staff (Buffalo seems happy to carry your bags up the hill if you don't want… Chugchilan - Day 1 - Incredible, if bumpy, bus ride |
