I guess everyone tries the hot dogs Feb 14, 2017
I spent several months preparing for my trip and i had read so much about this famous street stall i actually came upon it by chance but knew exactly what to expect. This establishment has been open since 1937 and you will find their stall near the Old Harbour behind the Kolaportid (the fleamarket building which is held at the weekend) at Tryggavata. There are actually five more locations in the capital but most tourists flock here.

BAEJERINS BEZTU PYLSUR actually means 'the best hot dog in town' and in 2006 the Guardian (British Newspaper) claimed that it was the best hot dog in the whole of Europe.

They only sell hot dogs and drinks, nothing else but you must order your hot dog with all the extras ( ketchup, sweet mustard, fried onion, raw onion and remoladi, a mayonnaise-based sauce with sweet relish), “eina með öllu”, if you can manage to pronounce it.

Get back to my experience. There was a line of around 15 people waiting for the famous dog so i just joined the line at the back and in a few minutes i was seated at one of the two outdoor tables munching on the hot dog accompanied with a coke. Iceland has an abundance of sheep to supply the hot dog makers so the actual hot dog is made from lamb, along with some pork and beef. One of the famous customers to try a dog was Bill Clinton.

Oh, and my verdict ! Well i had a hot dog on two occasions, sure they were good, but i also tried other stands and could not tell the difference, but at 400 ISK i cannot complain.

It's the best hotdog in town - literally! Jan 08, 2011
This Icelandic institution, a small booth, in a parking lot by the harbour, started in the 1930s.

Bæjarins beztu pylsur literally meaning "The best hot dog in town" is a small no-nonsense hotdog stand, with but a table-bench outside in an parking lot area to sit on, serves up hotdog from midday to dawn, especially during the weekend nights.

My friends and I ordered each with 'everything on it'. Cost: 280KR (approx $2.75). The hotdog itself is unassumingly normal looking. A hotdog bun with onions underneath the hotdog and two types of sauces on top - mayo and mushroom gravy sauce. The taste? Delicious! The fried onions underneath is crunchy, giving it a surprising and exciting texture lacking in ordinary hotdog. The sauces were mild but creamy and tasty, complementing the hotdog, onions and the bun. It is very hard to describe the taste, so one must really have taste it to understand it! The lady at the stand said it is best eaten when warm.
