Bishops Castle experience Jul 26, 2017
Great trip for those in the area and out of towners! The drive up there was beautiful during the winter days. There was snow all over in the mountains, and even while we were out there it snowed more. We even seen lots of wildlife along the way, such as mountain goats, elks, and deers (of course). You may even get an opportunity to pullover and take some photos as well. The drive (at times) has two way roads for awhile, so be cautious of going around curves. Doing the speed limit is wise, and remember, animals may jump out on the roads.

The Bishops Castle is worth seeing, since it was built by a man with great ambition to create such a sight. I find myself bringing out of town visitors here often. The castle has some slippery steps, so bring shoes with traction. Flat boots in the winter will not workout as much. The price is FREE to tour, although the owner recommends donations because he is still building on his castle. Just know, there was not a snack bar or any place to buy food within 15 miles. Bring your own snacks, and drinks.

I have heard of people having weddings there, and I also recommend this place for those that like the "Game of Thrones" feel as well. With the dragon above the castle, the huge throne chair and the bridge; I always feel like I am in that era too. The place has warning signs from the owner, throughout your tour. He breaks down the meaning behind his creation, theories, and even warns that you should not leave personal belongings in your car due to thieves. I had no issues, but just know that he mentions it on his posters. Also, bring a camera or smart-phone for plenty of great shots.

A castle in Colorado, built by a crazy person. Jun 26, 2012
Bishop Castle is one of the weirder sights in Southern Colorado, being that it is a giant castle with a wrought-iron dragon's head sticking out the front. It was constructed privately by a local crazy person named Jim Bishop. As far as I know, no one has died since the castle was constructed - but climbing to the very top and feeling the structure sway in the wind beneath you - you wouldn't believe it!

You are also going to be treated to various hand-written signs condemning drivers licenses and telling you in no uncertain terms that it is your fault that you are here, and that you cannot sue the Bishop family if anything happens to you.

Fun for the whole family, but don't get caught there after dark!
