Birseck Castle, and the Stork Mar 22, 2017
Birseck castle is located on a small hill by the entrance to Eremitage gardens, overlooking the village. The castle has medieval origins. In those times it belonged to the Bishops of Basel. It was destroyed in the revolution wars at the end of the 18th century and refurbished in 1812, together with the final phase in the construction of the Eremitage gardens. Hence a lot of its present shape is 19th century historism.

The castle is open to visitors in the summer months (May - September) on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from 14.00 - 17.00.

Watch out for the stork's nest on top of the castle keep. Wild storks live in the area and they do build their nests on top of high buildings but - this one is fake, it is a metal weather vane...
