Birdworld Kuranda Cairns Reviews
Small but Sweet Dec 28, 2012
To get here from Cairns there is a bus from Cairns Mall Zone D To Kuranda, the charming little town in the mountains. The trip takes 40 minutes. There is also the Kuranda Scenic Rail train that leaves from Cairns Central Rail Station to Kuranda town at 8.30am and 9.30am. It takes about 2 hours to arrive in Kuranda, but it drives quite slowly as it is a scenic train. This train costs $48 one way.
The Birdworld park costs about $20 admission and is very small. You walk in to a raised platform area with wooden beams running around the edges where all the friendly birds perch. The birds are very well familiar with humans and are quite curious to stand on your arms and shoulders. Their colours are extremely vibrant! There was this one very large parrot who kept jumping on people's shoulders. He was playing and bit some guys hand pretty hard and left a bit of a mark with his beak. He also bit some guys ear and it was bleeding a little bit. But nothing serious! The children there were thoroughly enjoying seeing tropical birds flying above their heads and seeing them fly onto their dad's shoulders!
There were plenty of different styles of birds present in the park but only about 5 are accustomed to human contact, the rest keep their distance.
It was worth getting a photo with a bird on your shoulder but other than that, similiar to the Koala Park right next door to it, it was vastly overpriced.
