Great Place to stay during 4th of July Fireworks Mar 15, 2009
The Birch Bay Hostel used to be a barracks on an old Air Force base. Rooms are what you would expect in a dorm...bunk beds and shared bathrooms. There are a few rooms that available for families to stay together.

The kitchen is small, but has everything you need to cook your dinner. Depending on the time of year, wander around the area and pick fresh blackberries to make muffins for breakfast.

News since I last visited: The hostel is now locked between 10am-5pm, so you have to get out and do things.

During the 4th of July, drive or walk down to the beach on the bay where everyone and their mother are having picnics (with campfires), drinking and setting off fireworks (stands to buy them are everywhere). It gets kind of crazy since these aren't official fireworks, but the fire department is on top of everything, so nothing gets out of hand.

Sounds wonderful! Maybe I'll get up that way next summer and check it out.

2011 - The hostel under new management has been renewed and repainted. New linens and dorm rooms reduced to three beds to a room and four new family rooms and a number of private rooms.
The kitchen large, two stoves, three fridges and lots of food storage space.
NO LONGER HAS A LOCK OUT.
Art filling the walls and a weekly Drum Circle that is open to all.
