Biosphäre Potsdam Reviews
A journey through the tropics Aug 10, 2011
’Biosphäre Potsdam’, offering an authentic rain forest experience, belongs to Europe’s largest tropic houses.
A combination of tropic flora like banana and cacao trees, and exotic fauna such as frogs, snakes and turtles, waterfalls and imitated thunderstorms, tropical temperatures and high humidity complete the atmosphere.
An under water world including corals and colourful fish is exhibited in a submarine.
Furthermore there are constantly changing exhibitions. We got to know interesting facts about (renewable) energy sources and their worldwide consumption.
I think the biosphere’s greatest plus is the close to the action experience appealing to all senses.
Every visitor is invited to take part in diverse experiments along the way which help to discover the multi-faceted world of the rain forest and explain the significance of this shrinking ecosystem.
Some of my favourite highlights were the butterfly house where friendly staff is more than happy to share a couple of worth knowing facts, the exotic insects, the wonderful aquatic habitats and the virtual flight over the Amazon Rain Forest. And honesty, it’s highly devastating that every two seconds an area of about 7,000 square metres of rain forest is destroyed. If we don’t stop this cruel deforestation in 2063 the only rain forest will exist here in Potsdam!
You are allowed to take as many photos as you like, but do not use flashlight when photographing the animals.
The biosphere is also accessible for prams and wheelchairs. Besides information panels and films, many seating areas, a café and a souvenir shop complete the package.
You can visit the biosphere weekdays from 9am to 6pm and from 10am to 7pm at the weekend/ on public holidays.
Biosphere Potsdam is a magnificent tropic world showing the rain forest’s beauty and teaching the importance of protecting this incredible ecosystem! It’s a fun but also instructive way of spending a day.
