The place where you can't go in the caves or take photos May 04, 2008
For a place called Thousand buddha caves, there were really very few buddhas to see or caves to go into. The big buddha was impressive and a symbol of this place Binglingsi, the scenery on the reservoir was good and got more impressive near the end, but for the amount of time spent to get here and the money, there are better places to see elsewhere. However, if you are in Lanzhou, and have a spare day, and let's see, 23 RMB each for the bus + 130 split 3 ways for the taxi back, 95 each for the boat, 50 each or the ticket, and then perhaps 60 to be shared by a party of 4 for the jeep ride to the upper lama temple which could be the highlight that we did not go to see, and at least 5 hours on the road and boat. You may end up spending 1-2 hours at the site. So it's a trade-off of time and money and hassle.

I think the most irksome part is the boat driver told us to be back in 1 hour, which made it impossible to see the upper temple. But in fact, we should have ignored her, and went anyway, they would just have to wait for us. I wish somebody would tell me if the upper temple was really worth it, because the lower part was a nice walk along the river, with some not all that special caves or carvings along the wall or cliff, exposed to the outside sun and rain, but NO photography! The stairs leading to perhaps more spectacular caves higher up were all blocked or dismantled, so you can not go up. The small museum at the opposite side of the almost dried up river was a surprise and very good.
