Bill's Restaurant Liverpool Reviews
Average Service left us disappointed May 25, 2015
I’ve walked past this restaurant a number of times – basically because it does not look much from the outside. However, my friend has visited a few of these franchises and convinced me into taking afternoon tea here.
On first impressions, it does not look very appealing; the tables were in very close proximity to each other and the table for two that we were seated at was small, too small in my opinion, which was evident later on. However, the decor was somewhat quirky and gave it an individual appearance and atmosphere.
Having checked that they did offer an afternoon tea prior to being seated, it was obvious that was what we were going to order. However, service was slow, and we had been seated a good fifteen minutes before the waitress came back to take our order of two afternoon teas. The waitress then asked us as to whether we wanted the teas on separate stands or would we prefer them to be on one larger stand. Now given the lack of table space we opted for one stand and a teapot for two.
The tea arrived a good 10-15 minutes before the actual afternoon tea itself, and when the cake stand arrived I was a tad confused as to the items laid out. Bearing in mind it was afternoon tea for two, there was 7 finger sandwiches – rather an odd number I thought, two scones, with one pot of jam and one pot of clotted cream (barely enough for one scone let alone two) and the selection of cakes was bizarre in itself – one slice of carrot cake, one strawberry tart, one cube of marshmallow and two brownies. (I did wonder why there was not two of everything.)
We did consider questioning the actual contents of the afternoon tea, compared to what we would have received if we’d have asked for individual teas, but given that we had waited so long for our food, we decided against this in case it resulted in us waiting further.
I have to say that it was all well-presented and everything tasted delightful.
We returned here a couple of weeks later, when the 3 Queens were in dock. We’d found it difficult to find somewhere to eat, with Liverpool being so busy and we ended up back in the Liverpool One area. The majority of restaurants were full, but we managed to get a table here. After looking at the menu and not really knowing what we wanted to eat, we opted again for the Afternoon tea.
Service was a little quicker this time, but I have to say, that again, one would have to question the contents of the Afternoon tea, we should have learnt from our last visit and opted for two separate teas, but again with limited table space this is not really viable. Our stand came with 8 finger sandwiches this time, but we were a cake down – this peeved me off, so I call the waiter over and asked as to whether a cake was missing – his reply ‘why do you ask?’ I responded with ‘well two weeks earlier, we had also had a strawberry tart’ – he replied with ‘…………and you’ve not eaten anything yet?’ I actually could not believe he’d asked such a question and when my friend replied ‘well no, as you can see the sandwiches are all still there’ his response was ‘I’ll go and find out what’s happened’ Two minutes later he came back with a strawberry tart, and apologized.
Would I visit here again – probably not. This is due to the inconsistency on two separate occasions with the Afternoon Teas, and the waiter’s response when questioned about this.
Afternoon Tea served between 2.30pm – 5.30pm – £9.95 or £12.95 with a glass of Prosecco
