Feels like staying at a nursing home Oct 02, 2013
The Bilderberg Parkhotel is the “Grand dame” of Rotterdam – as they like to call themselves. This 4 star hotel goes a long way back – and has been around for nearly a century - but has been added onto over the years to keep up with today’s needs.

The hotel is located on the “Westersingel”, which is part of the ring road around the center, next to the Museum Park. Pretty much every attraction of the city lies within walking distance. The Maas Boulevard and the Erasmus Bridge are but a 15 minutes’ stroll away.

The hotel features its own small private parking lot, for which its website says you cannot reserve a space; but when I arrived to the hotel, I discovered that there was no vacant parking spot anymore, due to more than a dozen of reserved places! Given the fact that it is very difficult to find parking in this area, this surely is a deal breaker. The hotel however does team up with another parking garage at 5 minutes’ walk, from where a discounted fare can be obtained; but you need to "park" the car in order to go into the hotel and enquire at the lobby to know about this!!!

Rooms are divided over various parts of the hotel. There is the “villa” part, which is the oldest part of the hotel. Then there is the garden part, with rooms located around the inner garden and then there are rooms in the two towers. The Hoboken tower houses the “deluxe rooms, while the Mecanoo tower features the executive rooms. The different parts all have their own distinctive numbering system, which is nothing short of confusing at first. It took me a while to locate my room!

The hotel features a large and modern lobby with ample sitting and working space. There are two computer terminals but Wi-Fi is charged in the entire hotel and doesn’t come cheap. Both wired and wireless internet set you back a horrendous € 17,00 for 24 hours.

Check-in took a while to get completed and an imprint of the credit card is made for all incidentals; but the staff is very friendly and helpful. They have the genuine Dutch spontaneity and no request was ever too difficult.

I was allocated a “deluxe” room in the Hoboken tower, which can be accessed via the second elevator, closest to the bar. All rooms in this part of the hotel are within the numbers 6000. This has nothing to do with the 6th floor. It’s the 3rd digit that marks the floor number. My room 6041 was on the 4th floor of this tower.

A “deluxe” room is actually a nicer way of naming a standard. I received a spacious yet outdated room on the 4th floor. The corridors of the Hoboken tower as well as the interior of the room are not very inviting and resemble a bit a nursing home facility. There was an iron with board in the corridor in front of my room, which wasn’t removed in the 24 hours I spent at the hotel.

Apart from the rather daft and dated interior, the room features a comfortable king size bed and a spacious working desk with a possibility for wired internet connection too. As I stated before, all internet access is paid, but works fast and efficient. Prints can be picked up free of charge from the reception desk downstairs.

There’s also a dresser with minibar and kettle with complimentary coffee and tea. Minibar items are pricy – even for Dutch standards. There’s individually controlled air-conditioning that doubles as heater in winter time and there’s a flat screen TV.

The bathroom is spacious with a bath tub annex shower and large sink area with complimentary shampoo and shower gel. It was neat and clean but very bland. In general, the room seriously lacked charm. I don't know about the rooms in other parts of the hotel though...

My rate included breakfast, which is served in the oldest part of the hotel. The buffet side of the breakfast room looks a bit daft too, but the sitting area with view on the garden is light and pleasant. The buffet is very small for a hotel of this standard and has but the bare essentials. The choice of hot items is limited to bacon, eggs and sausage. Furthermore there are bread and rolls, cold cuts, cheese, jam, a bit of fruit, yoghurt and cereal. It’s nothing to be enthusiast about.

The hotel features an okay looking bar and modern restaurant, but I did not eat or drink there. Nor did I use the tiny gym with sauna.

The great selling factor of this hotel must be its helpful and enthusiast staff and the good location, because its standard rooms and breakfast buffet are mediocre at best and not really worth its 4 stars.
