Bifrost is in fact an University village, home to almost 600 people. Founded in 1918 in Reykjavik, the university was moved 110km west of the capital in 1955. Today, it hosts the faculties of Law, Social Sciences and Business.
Despite its academic purpose, Bifrost is a nice stopover for travellers in the Borgarfjordur district. It is located in the middle of a 3600 year old lava field. Also, Grábrók, a volcanic crater together with the lava fields are part of a natural reserve, which is in walking distance from the campus.
Although small, Bifrost has a hotel, a cafe, a restaurant and, as part of the campus, there's also a fitness centre and a football(soccer) field.
