Priceless early 18th century library Aug 14, 2010
This library is part of the University of Coimbra. To see it walk, take a bus or use the lift above the market and get to the very top of the town, You will find a large square with the modern University Library in one part. An arch takes you into another large square with generally older University buildings, one of which is the Biblioteca Joanina.

I strongly advise looking at the interesting website, http://www.travbuddy.com/place_create.php?placetype=1&tid=&lid=

There are three rooms piled high in ancient books and plenty of perfect old oak furniture. One thing I found particular interesting is that they have a colony of bats inside the library as one line of defence against minute insects, that would harm the books otherwise, Of course the shit of these could be damaging and the website describes the human precautions against this!
