The flight out of Paro back to New Delhi flew via Kathmandu. As we were early again, we managed to get seats on the right side of the plane. We were able to see Mt Jhomohari and Jichu Drake peaks above the sea of clouds shortly after departing Paro. It was a beautiful sight and the camera was clicking away furiously.
Proceeding towards Kathmandu, there were lots of clouds but when we reached the Himalayan mountain range, all the high peaks rose above the clouds to create a magnificen...

Note: A very special thanks to Andy and Soma at RBC for enabling our Bhutan visit!
4/28/07Not that either of us slept much after struggling to get the Sikkim trip arranged and being excited about finally making it to Bhutan, but the alarm went off at 3:15 a.m. and we blearily dragged ourselves out of bed, packed up and hopped in a cab to the airport. Murli actually woke up at three something as well, just to make sure we were awake and didn’t miss our flight.
The airport was very b...

We are now in a town called Wangdue Phodrang around 3 hours east of the capital. The place we are staying in is really nice. We are in a villa right (I mean 10 metres away) from a rushing river. Its a gorgeous spot and the river makes a huge noise. Very peaceful.Today we had a very long car trip from a town called Jakar in the east of Bhutan. It was only 180km but took around 7 hours. It was a beautiful sunny day and the views were spectacular, however Hugh was a bit high maintenance for some...

So it's all over. Bhutan is beautiful, the people are friendly, the food is great (as long as you ask them for the same food they eat, or else you'll get icky/bland tourist fare)...it's totally worth the trip.
We spent the last afternoon shopping for gifts and then had dinner with our guides. Then it was back to Bangkok...

Nailed to the rock of truth, grafted into the tree of knowledge, C I James left us a
great little tale of wisdom.
A big dog saw a little dog chasing its tail and asked, 'why are you
chasing your tail so?' Said the puppy, 'I have mastered philosophy, ..

According to our guide, the Tiger's nest was to be the cultural highlight of the trip as we visited Bhutan during a spell without festivals (the most popular among the Bhutanese is the one in the center of Bhutan where the female performers dance naked, I wonder why it's so hugely popular).
The Tiger's nest is located on a very steep cliff in a cave where legend has it that one of the greatest Bhutanese generals found a tiger and its offspring and decided that this was a good omen to build a...

This is without a doubt, one of the prettiest and one of my favorite countries ever visited (out of 107). The people are so genuine and laid-back and the food is scrumptious. It is so clean, I forget I'm not in the Swiss Alps. The perfect antidote to my current home in Bangkok.
After a harrowing landing through a narrow, twisting valley, I meet my personal guide and driver to be whisked off to see the country for three perfect days. Cheap it is not, but Bhutan is...

Day 2 was spent watching the last day of the Tshechu festival in the Tashichodzong. Translated means we saw the last day of a hella cool festival in one of the largest temples in Bhutan. The festival was amazing and was full of traditional dances and costumes. Apparently the dancers are in trances when they are performing which seemed pretty true, especially for the skeleton dance. This is where we spent all morning and a good portion of the afternoon. As the festival was nearing I headed off...

After meeting up with my tour group (I appear to have signed up to an Aussie SAGA holiday!) we then get told that we can't fly to Bhutan as planned because the Bhutan Authorities have cancelled the flight... so we get an extra day in Kathmandu sightseeing and head to Bhutan on the 15th instead.
Bhutan is a great place to visit - loads of interesting architecture in the form of Dzongs (fortresses), Lhankhang (temples); stunning scenery as yet unspoilt by tourism plus the people are frien...

The focus has been made to Punakha Dzong and the bridge you see is completed recently.
The fortress was built in 17th century and it is one of most beautiful and biggest fortress in Bhutan.

We reached Thimpu around 7 in the evening and started looking around for some cheap accommodation. Most of the hotels are high end ones, but my taxi driver helped me and took me to a couple of cheap ones. Checked some 2-3 of them and finally settled in one which had a more homely feeling. This is a family run place; they live on the first floor and have some 5 rooms to rent on the 2nd floor with attached bathrooms. Nothing much to fancy but had the bare minimum necessities with a ...
