Cuzco could be a lovely place, but if you like to see thing out of the tourist places you have to have your senses on (something like the Spider man senses activate), because of course the tourist seems to be in a spotlight, even more when you go out from the main places.
My experience was frustrating, I've been in places that are more dangerous and nothing happened, but try to avoid the area around the market and the social installations from the football/soccer club, Cienciano (even more, if they are selling tickets for a match).
The modus operandi seems to be simply, no violence at all, a couple, usually a man and a woman follows you, and in those little sideways the street have, the one who is walking in front of you will suddenly stops, while you are going into him/her or trying to stop as well, the other one who is behind you will be on your back, and this kind of stumble will happen as many times as they can until they robber you what they want. So try to avoid those places and if you see something suspicious like this kind of human sandwich (yeah, they will be the slices of bread and you are going to be the jam or cheese).
So never have important things in there, they will open bad, backpacks, whatever zipper in this running into you.
When they stole you and you go to the tourist's police, nothing will be solved, they now how the people operate, they know where they are going to sell the camera, mp3, mobile phone or whatever they took, and nobody in the police will help you after all. You will have to pay for a special paper in order to do the statement, and you have to go to a specific bank, and doing this or doing nothing is the same, you lose and it is going to be only a some stats for them.
So if you go out of the main touristic area, put your things on your chest or front side and avoid people!
