Beware of Avalon! Travel Reviews

Dec 29, 2006
Last night i flew out of Melbourne from Avalon Airport and it was hell. This airport is solely for the use of Jet Star (the cheap Qantas) and only has one gate and 2 check in desks. I have actually seen petrol stations with more amenities. The airport was a shack with a corregated iron roof. Apart from anything, the aiport was at least an hour away from Melbourne city and there are no trains or shuttle buses. We were lucky to have a friend to take us, otherwise we would have needed a very expensive taxi.
Beware if flying with Jet star. They are cheaper but mostly fly to Avalon and you will get stung by a heavy taxi cost.

I have to say that Avalon used to be a fully functional airport in the past, for Qantas and Ansett Airlines, aswell as aircraft maintenance. However, the airport was closed to commercial travel for atleast 5 years, and it was the initiation of JetStar to bring Avalon back into use.
JetStar does also fly to and from the main melbourne airport (Tullamarine) just make sure you select this when booking your flights. However, if your not aware, if you fly from Tulla, your also going to pay a similar fee to travel to the airport, and the travel time, depending where your located, can be similar. If your wanting to visit Geelong and the Surfcoast, your better off going to Avalon.
Give them a chance to get up and running, its only a new venture.
Also, Avalon is the home of the Avalon International Airshow, which is held every few years, and its fantastic!!! and having jetstar flying into avalon makes it a lot easier to acess for people, so a benefit there.
Also i'd like to say, i travelled to a few remote airports in Europe.... dare i begin to compare...

I agree. Be aware. The flights are cheaper, but the hour drive to Melbourne post flight is not worth it. You have to pay a taxi or get the shuttle bus, which is around $20.

The airport itself is not very orgainsed, as stated.

On the shuttle bus though the driver was a driver/ tour guide and guided us through to Melbourne, with his knowledge of the highway, bore...

Agreed. It's usually worth the extra $20 to go with Virgin Blue :)

Clarafina says: Public transport in Melbourne is fairly good - we have trams, trains and buses. The ticketing is done via the Metlink system; and you can buy these either on trams, at train stations, or from the driver when you get on the bus. All trams (and the buses and trains up to certain stops/stations) ar...
Horse says: Hey Ashley. Melbourne is cold this time of year, around 5 to 18 degrees each day probably from now until mid August. I would say things are averagly priced but you can get some good bargins if you shop around a bit. Make sure you watch plenty of AFL footy. Its great! And the team you support is t...
eejot says: http://www.wotif.com/ For those of you curious about making a booking through wotif.com, then don't be afraid. I used them to book a few nights here in Melbourne and had no problems. Booking fee is around $3.50 (3.45 I think), which was cheaper than a few of the other websites operating. And the r...
