Bethlehem Vacation Guide
Bethlehem is a city in eastern Pennsylvania, located in the heart of the Lehigh Valley. The city is located on the banks of the Lehigh River, approximately 60 miles north of Philadelphia and 75 miles west of New York City.
Bethlehem was first settled by the Moravians, a group from Germany on Christmas Eve 1741, and named after the birthplace of Jesus Christ. To celebrate both its rich german ancestry and ties to Christmas, Bethlehem holds an annual christkindlmarkt and exhibits a lavish "Star of Bethlehem" on South Mountain each December. In 1937, the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce stated that the city would forever be known as Christmas City, USA.
The city is also home to the former Bethlehem Steel Corporation, which was once the United States 2nd leading producer in steel after Pittsburgh. It had a hand in producing much of the steel used in both WWI & WWII. Culturally, Bethlehem is home to both Lehigh University and Moravian University, the former of which is home to the Philadelphia Eagles training camp each August.
