Betel Box Singapore Backpacker Hostel and Tours Reviews
Great place for backpackers Dec 13, 2009
This is certainly a long overdue review but Betel Box deserves this one, especially that there are lots of travbuddies heading to Singapore. Well, I am pretty sure many of TBers had stayed in this place as well. So, here are my two cents on Betel Box.
It’s very friendly, very warm and very cheap. I love the hosts in the hostel and there’s a certain feeling of ‘community’ in the communal area. Breakfasts which consist of bread, coffee, and fruits are free. Internet use is free as well and you can just relax in the lounge area while waiting for your friends or if you don’t feel like going out. There are books to read, movies to watch, games to play and people to watch in the streets, haha.
But of course, as travelers, we want to see much of the city as we can and Betel Box can also be of help. It is also known for its arranged tours and activities which are FREE (except of course for your personal expenses).
We were a large group when we were there – 17 all in all, mostly young people. We weren’t able to join Tony’s free tours, however since we have arranged tours of our own but judging from what the other guests had shared on their experience, they had fun.
Betel Box is not a big hostel tho but the rooms are as comfortable as a backpacker hostel can be. Facilities are also shared and there are no private toilets. Dorms are mixed as well and there are only 8 beds in the room exclusive for females.
When we were there, we arranged for a dorm to be exclusive for girls and one dorm for the boys (great thing they agreed).
Room rates start @ 20 Singaporean dollars with thick mattresses, hot and cold showers and free use of bed linen and blanket.
Free guided activities include pub, bar crawls, food walk, nature walk and cycling activity.
Betel Box is a good place for backpackers.
However, I don’t recommend it for families with small children since place is not big enough for them and the location is not that child-friendly considering the bars/pubs in the area.
All in all, if you're traveling to Singapore and you're looking for a fun place to stay, reasonable price and wants to meet cool people, this is the place for you. You'll love it here for sure.
