Charming Old Venice Feel ... Jan 09, 2010
When we arrived in Venice we were quite lost. It came out the motel was fairly close to the train station... We asked a couple of times and were surprised to find it so quickly. The outside of the building was very plain. We were worried when we saw it. But upon opening the door there was a transformation... The desk was hand painted and probably hand carved. It had a huge bouquet on the desk. There was a darling sitting room off of the lobby (marble floors) with a cozy rug. The breakfast area was behind the reception area. There was a huge chandelier of Venetian glass. We were charmed. It was just the beginning.... The personnel were so friendly and nice. They helped us check in and escorted us up to our rooms. The elevator was very small ... an adventure in itself.
In the rooms we found the beds were carved and had the same delicate flowers painted on the headboards. The side tables were of the same design. We had a third floor room. (Just for the record...mosquitoes CAN and DO fly that high..we got tons of bites as we slept with the windows open..duh) The bed was a little soft for us but it was comfortable. The room was clean and a delight. It also had a great chandelier.....
The next morning we were very pleased to see the variety of the breakfast .... there were lunch meats, breads, sweet rolls, fruit, coffee, tea, nutella, cheeses and more. We really enjoyed the meal.
The motel is very well located. Directly across from it is a " water taxi" type stand and a place to catch water busses. The train station is within 2 blocks.... right around the corner (to the right) is a wonderful neighborhood with restaurants and bakeries. There is a cute coffee shop directly across the canal where we sat in the sunshine and enjoyed a cup of coffee and a snack one afternoon.
We took a free tour of the Moreno Island at the desk clerk's suggestion.... it was supposed to include a boat ride back...but it didn't have that. that's OK... we got a free ride over... It went directly to a glass company's place and we saw them do some glass work and looked at their extensive and expensive show room. We didn't find Moreno island to be very friendly and it was extemely expensive to eat. We accidently ate at a place that was 25 Euros a person and it was just spaghetti. (The sign indicated two people ate for 25 Euro... but apparently it was wrong) Poorly prepared and reluctantly served by a man who complained to us that he was almost off work. We did get some nice pictures on the island. If we had it to do again we would skip the "free tour". It was the only bad advice we got at the Olimpia Hotel desk. Everything else was really excellent.
Olimpia motel is a three star motel. It was fun, comfortable, charming and clean. We loved it and will absolutely go back again.
