A Haven in Rome Feb 26, 2012
In a 130 year old building five minutes from Termini Station is the three-starred Best Western Hotel Canada. Run by the Pucci family, this hotel is a haven from the mobs of tourists visiting Rome.
My room had a comfortable four poster bed and the bathroom was spotless, with a shower providing ample hot water. All rooms have Wi-Fi and modem connections. My room included a desk, relaxing chair and television, along with high ceilings.
One of the big draws of this hotel is the breakfast buffet which is included in the price. The buffet includes delicious cakes, pastries, yogurt, cold cuts (definitely try the salami!), cheeses, cereals, eggs, breads and fresh fruits. Each day the buffet changes and the owners obviously have a lot of pride in its presentation.
The lobby itself contains a reading area with books and magazines in several languages. I had to laugh that Shakespeare's plays in Italian were available plus many past issues of National Geographic in English.
The lobby bar, Canadian Bar, offers a full drinks menu in the evening plus sandwiches are available. Gelato is available in the summer months.
This hotel is close to Termini Station which is a plus when you are arriving from the airport on the Leonardo Express. The downside is the hotel is a bit of a walk to the main tourist sights; however, the metro (both lines A and B) is available in Termini so it's a close subway ride to the Colosseum or Trevi Fountain as examples.
One downside is if you are looking for a classic Italian dinner in the evening, most of the restaurants in the Termini area are purely tourist driven, so you may have to travel a bit.
To get to this hotel, take the Via Marsala exit out of Termini and turn left. Via Vicenza is the first right and Hotel Canada will be at the end of the street.
I have stayed at this hotel twice as the family pride is what most impressed me. The last time I stayed, two French couples were celebrating a birthday in the breakfast room. The staff went out and picked some fresh flowers to present to them. I was stunned by that kind of attention to detail.
I also had injured my foot on my last visit to Rome and was limping by the time I returned to the hotel. The barman could tell I was injured and gave me a free sandwich, which was very kind. Months after I visited the first time, I received a Christmas card from the Pucci family. It's the only time I've ever gotten a Christmas card from a hotel!
Hotel Canada is a family business and the pride is evident in the treatment of guests. I would easily return to this hotel again and again.
