A satisfactory stay in hectic Madrid Jan 11, 2017
I stayed at the Hotel Arosa in June 2015 for 4 nights and had an enjoyable, if unspectacular stay. For the amount I paid (around £45 a night), I thought the hotel was decent value for money. Check-in took a while as the lady on reception took her time inputting details from my passport which I found somewhat disconcerting. In fact, I found the customer service and general attitude of the staff was not great. The majority of them looked bored and did not go out of their way to be helpful. The exception to this were the breakfast staff who were more smiley and approachable. Breakfast at the Arosa was quite nice with lots of options such as bread, meats, fruit and cereals. I did not like the yoghurts though and some of the fruit looked like it had seen better days.

My room (205) also had seen better days. There was paint peeling off the top of the walls, the wardrobe door kept falling off and the carpet was worn. The important thing for me though was that the room was clean which it definitely was. It just looked like it was in need of some updating and TLC. The in-room safe was activated by a credit card although it kept malfunctioning so in the end I just gave up with it. The decor of the room was not really to my taste. As well as the hideous geisha picture above the bed (see photo), the bathroom was decked out in a mustard colour and the TV was a big chunky 1980's jobbie. That said, I don't go on holiday to stay in the room watching TV so it didn't bother me much.

Were I to return to Madrid, I probably wouldn't stay here again as there are plenty of options in the city centre. I did see the state of some of the other city centre hotels though and I think I got off lightly at the Arosa. Some of the hotels looked like absolute dives! For those on a budget and who don't mind staying in a hotel that's ragged around the edges, the Arosa isn't a bad choice. Just don't expect four star service and amenities! There is no way in my opinion that the Arosa warrants 4 star hotel status.

The location of the hotel is its most redeeming feature. It is within a couple of minutes walk of two very useful Metro stations, Callao and Gran Via. The location just off Gran Via makes it an ideal base and you can walk to most places in the city centre in around 20-30 minutes.

The hotel also has two very unique lifts/elevators. They are tiny and need to be seen to be believed. I found them quite amusing but some other guests seemed to find them infuriating!

Terrific location in the heart of Madrid Sep 09, 2011
Location: Best Western Arosa is only a block from Gran Via metro stop and two blocks from the city's Hop-on/Hop-off bus stop. Hotel entrance is a few doors down on a side street; two small elevators take you to the second floor, where the lobby, bar and business center are.

Hotel room: It had a clean, contemporary/Asian feel thanks to the dark vinyl floor tile, low platform bed, wall art and choice of fabrics. Bed lost points because those with bad backs or knee problems may find that the bed is hard to manage, the two flat pillows that were available had no loft and there were no extras in the closet.

Minus one cleanliness star because the two decorator pillows on the bed were worn and smelled like very old foam rubber.

Bathroom: Lower Amenities rating because it did not have individual toiletries, only wall dispensers containing an all-purpose hand/hair/body wash. I'd have only given it two stars, but there was a sign saying "let us know if you have forgotten anything and we will provide it."

Service: Bar, no restaurant. (Plenty nearby.) Excellent breakfast buffet. They obviously put a lot of thought into it because they even offer Asian breakfast foods. There's a sign at the registration disk that says that if you tell them you'll want it when you check in, you'll get a 40% discount. I didn't notice it until we checked out, but the desk clerk heard me tell my husband that and gave us the discount anyway.

One last note on the location: We went out for dinner late and discovered a prostitute hangout nearby, but it was quiet. Police were patrolling the area.

Great location down town Madrid Feb 25, 2010
Downtown Madrid, a comfortable ****Best Western hotel, great location. Metro station ‘Gran Via’ is right around the corner. One minute to get there.

Walking to ‘Sol’ will take 5 minutes. Plaza Mayor about 10 minutes. The Prado 15 minutes.

Entering the hotel (Salud 21, corner Gran Via 29) you take one of the small elevators to the reception at the second floor. There are two elevators, one is small (a sign says it is for 6 people…. well small people :-)), the other one is the tiniest elevator I’ve ever seen. Mend for 4 people, but with 2 adults it is loaded!!

At the ground floor there was always a doorman watching people entering the hotel.

Businesslike, friendly staff at the reception desk.

My room was rather small but very comfortable and very clean. Bathroom too! Bathroom with shower in the bathtub, bidet, toilet and sink with plenty of room for toiletries. Soap and shampoo provided.

In the room a television, safe (to be operated with your credit card, no charge), mini bar and free Wi-Fi (get a user id and password from the reception).

This room was located on an inner court. So no view, but no noise too!

Breakfast is buffet style and well provided, again a nice staff. Not the most ridge breakfast I’ve seen, but more than okay!

I'd be nervous about a safe with a credit card though since mine would probably be inside it.

Affordable 3 star hotel with average accomodations Sep 13, 2008
My friend I was traveling with was on a budget, so our travel agent booked according to location. Everything was in fairly close proximity. We were less than a 10 minute walk to Puerta Del Sol and we basically walked everywhere. Even though we took the metro a few times, it really wasn't necessary.

The rooms were small, but clean. The bathrooms were very up to date. I was only in my hotel room to use the facilities, take a shower and sleep. So the window with a view of adjacent buildings did not bother me. A friend staying on the same floor, but on the other side of the hotel, had a balcony.

Do not bother going to the gym!!! It is a small room consisting of one elliptical machine that was not working, a stationary bicycle that was not working and a row machine. There were also free weights, an exercise mat and an exercise ball. If you're looking to burn calories by doing cardio, you are better off walking the streets of Madrid while sightseeing. Luckily, I used to be a certified personal trainer and am able to create a good workout with the tools provided. Otherwise, you will simply waste your time here. It was a huge disappointment.

Make sure you bring a travel iron! They do have one you can borrow, but I believe it's literally only one that they have for all of the guests in the hotel .

The hotel reservations include continental breakfast, which wasn't anything spectacular. They offered the typical breakfast foods such as fruit, cereal, ham, bacon sausage, eggs, cheese, bread, juices and coffee.

This hotel has two elevators and one being the smallest 4 people elevator I have ever seen in my life! I have provided pictures for your entertainment.
