Out-of-town, no frills Hotel Apr 24, 2014
My experience of this place is somewhat skewed because I stayed as part of a school party, which are kept separate from the ‘main’ Hotel area by virtue of the fact they are, indeed, school groups. As you’d expect, school visits to the Ypres region are frequent, and we were one of several school groups staying at the time. But the fact they are kept separate will hopefully not put off any prospective travellers to the region!
The Lodge is situated outside of town (approximately 10 minutes’ drive from Menin Gate), so having your own transport seems very much essential if you stay here. It is situated in pleasant enough environs. The rooms, whilst basic, are comfortable with tea/coffee facilities and TV as standard. Each room has its own bathroom – and I can report that the shower in my room was hot and powerful!
Continental Breakfast is provided and the bar on the second floor is a lovely place to unwind in the evening over a Belgian beer or two (especially if you’ve been looking after 70+ teenage girls all day). WiFi is also available, and staff at the hotel are friendly and helpful.
In short, a nice place to stay, but its location and price – 80 Euros per night for one person when I last looked – probably make it a no go for independent, backpacking, budget travellers. As I very much err toward this when I travel independently, and because I feel there are most likely better and/or cheaper places in the centre of Ypres (and outside it), then I’m going to give it three stars. If you are able to fork out a bit more money and have your own set of wheels to explore the region, though, then this is probably a decent enough option.
