Find another budget hotel in SanFran Oct 12, 2012
We stayed here for a week in a group of 4 during November 2011, and found it to be reasonably clean and 'value for money' because it was "family room" cost divided by four, and within walking distance to the CBD but the positives stop there. As previous reviewers mention, the local is dodgy as heck, in one of the worst streets of SOMA. While we were there someone was stabbed to death next door on 6th St. All the homeless congregate in the area, many of which are former inpatients to the mental hospital in the area that was closed years ago.

Also, don't eat in the burger restaurant. It's expensive, tastes crap, and there is a engraved metal warning that they use chemicals in their food that lead to cancer (see photo attached). The bar was nice enough though, we liked the bar tender and it was reasonably priced.

We had some issues with the shower in the room, it only produced a tiny, thin stream of water and we were freezing any time we had to have a shower. The rooms themselves are comfortable enough, we had a good sleep in the beds, though honestly we were a little scared to turn the lights out and get into bed in the area - even with 4 of us in the room (with 2 guys)!

For American standards, the staff were below average. We had to get their help a few times, it was never with their pleasure or smile. The night we left, they refused to book us a taxi for an early airport departure, insisting it was tat the cab companies don't let anyone (person, hotel, business - any party) place a booking. This turned out to be complete BS - I rang the taxi company personally and placed a cab order for 5am. We had trouble getting a taxi from the hotel as few taxis wanted to pick anyone up from the area, and not many cruised by with their lights on (don't blame them!).

Many mornings I walked to the CBD (sometimes alone), but always as quickly as I possibly could, and always giving away lots of money to stop the homeless people following me. It was really not a 'fun' experience - but I did gain some insight into the issues the USA is facing socially and politically, so I thought that was valuable.

You can catch the trolley (tram) from just up on the main road, about 2 blocks up, to either the city or down to Castro. It's around $2 USD - but they only take $1 notes or change, so don't try and use anything higher. Castro is great, I ended up having lunch & dinner there most nights - unless I was in China town, which was also a good option. We spent one night in the Lexington Hotel in mission, which is a lesbian bar, that was lots of fun - we enjoyed the $1 tequilas.

Bottom line: stay away from 7th St & the SOMA area. You're better off being further away from the CBD in the Castro area, or going closer to the CBD around china town (and paying a little more) for safe, secure, and comfortable surroundings.

A decent hotel Oct 06, 2010
The Americania Hotel, is a enough decent hotel for a medium budget. The staff were great, all very friendly, efficient and helpful . This was put to the test after I stupidly left my pre-paid accommodation voucher in a hire car in Los Angeles, but the receptionist dealt with the problem without drama , made a few phone calls, and obtained the information she required.

The hotel rooms are semi motel style with open balcony walkways running along the outside of each floor. Thos open plan format proved to be a problem for us because our room was located at the front of the hotel and consequently there was quite a bit of traffic noise. The room itself was clean and comfortable and decorated in a retro 70’s style which we quite liked.

The biggest problem we found with the Americania is the location in the SOMA (South of Market) area of San Francisco. There is a reasonably short 10 or 15 minute walk to the cable car stop at Market and the tram is even closer but the walk is through a part of town where the homeless and down and outs seem to congregate and it was common to be approached by them for handouts. This was quite intimidating particularly for Julie and whether any threat was real or perceived it certainly made us feel a little uncomfortable at night.

Breakfast isn’t included in the rate, but the hotel has an integrated ‘Custom Burger’ restaurant on site which not only did great burgers, but also a pretty good, if a little pricey, breakfast. There is also a decent, reasonably priced bar which was very welcome. The free computer and internet access in the lobby is a nice touch and was well used by guests checking their flights. Other than that we didn’t get to try any of the other facilities such as the gym or pool although they both looked pretty decent.

In summary, I would recommend the hotel itself but you may find the walk to and from the centre of San Francisco a little hair raising. In hindsight we realised that there are better located hotels in San Francisco for the same money.

Tourist stay Oct 19, 2010
It was an all right hotel. Not very expensive and everything was clean. We had the luxury of having two rooms when we book for one. The staff was very friendly and when we wanted to ask something they where always helpful giving us directions.

The only thing that we all where a bit disappointed in was that the place they recommended to get breakfast at was really expensive. So after one day of breakfast there we went to the Subway to get our breakfast.

For the rest it was an okay stay but not something really special. Its a good place to stay for a couple of nights.
