Best Western Sheldon Park Hotel Dublin Reviews
Local bar that offers hotel rooms on the side Jun 09, 2011
We mainly picked this Best Western Hotel outside the city centre of Dublin because of its great prices (only € 50,- for a double room) and we reckoned it would be a lot quieter there than at a place in the centre. Next to that, the hotel also offers free wifi, which is also a big deal to us.
Though the lobby and the hallways all look posh, the rooms are a bit old fashioned. For instance, there are plenty of mirrors, but it is not possible to blow dry your hair or shave in front of a mirror, because the electrical sockets are too far from them. Next to that, in our room the cord on which the curtains were hung was worn down, so that the curtains seemed too large.
Breakfast is not included, you have to pay an extra €10 a person a day for that. If you’re into big, greasy Irish breakfasts, this is a good price. If you prefer something similar to a continental breakfast, it’s too expensive. The fried eggs are okay, the scrambled eggs are horribly tasteless. Since it is over twenty minutes on the red Luas line (a tram) to reach the centre and there are no alternative places in the vicinity to have breakfast (except for a McDonalds around the corner), there are no other options.
There’s a bar/restaurant in the hotel. They serve a decent meal and it has a ‘pub-atmosphere’. On the weekend the place is packed with elderly locals, who dance the night away to the music of a live band. We’ve heard two different bands and they were both horrible. We weren’t in the bar when we heard the bands, you can hear them crystal clear while you’re in your hotel room.
All in all, it wasn’t a bad hotel, I just wouldn’t choose to come back here again. Next time I would pay extra for a hotel more in the centre of Dublin that doesn’t have a bar with a loud band that plays Engelbert Humperdinck-rejects.
