The Best Western Rive North has a lot of things going for it. When I was planning my trip to Chicago I must have looked at two dozen hotels trying to find the best balance of location, price and amenities. Best Western River North kept coming out on top.

First, the location. Driving in Chicago should be avoided. If a city has a subway system, that is because traffic is a nightmare. Chicago has The El. So, I had to have a hotel near the subway. There is a Red Line stop just a few very walkable blocks away. There is a bus stop half a block away. The Chicago Free Trolley that runs during the summer has a stop near the subway. You are five long blocks from the Magnificent Mile. About the same distance from the Navy Pier. The Red Line will take you right to Wrigley Field. And either the bus, or the subway, will get you to any major attraction in Chicago, including both airports.

The River North area has plenty of dining choices; Pizzeria Ora is on site and does a good job. Across the street is the Hard Rock Café. Other touristy places within walking distance include: Hooters (my favorite!), Rain Forest Café, Ed Debevic’s (you have to experience this one), and ESPNZone. Notables include The House of Blues and Maggianos.

But the location of the hotel was only the start. The Best Western River North has an indoor pool, with a great view. And an amenity so rare in Chicago, you would think it had been outlawed, Free Parking for the guests who insist of fighting the traffic. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the staff took care of our little electrical problem promptly.

The hotel is a tad pricey, for the budget traveler. But, you have to expect to pay a premium for any Chicago hotel during the summer. We paid $165 per night, including tax. That was the worst knock I could come up with. But for me the location was so close to perfect I couldn’t pass it up.
