Best Western Resort & Spa Huangshan Reviews
Luxurious at first sight Oct 22, 2011
The Best Western Huangshan is located at the foot of Mt Huangshan, only 2 km from the Yuping cableway And about 500 meters from the hot springs.
It is supposed to be a five star hotel, but that's only in appearance...
The outside and the lobby look nice enough and all the necessary amenities are there, but it's lacking five star service for sure.
Check-in went fast and easy and we got our passports back right away, but when we got to our room, it turned out to be occupied. There was luggage of other passengers in the room and stuff lying on thr bed. Back at reception there was no apology, but we got a key to another room.
This room had not been cleaned yet. Two chamber maids were making the beds and vaccuming and cleaning. We had to wait another fifteen minutes down the corridor, but that was not such a big deal; this way we were at least sure to get a clean room with clean sheets.
The room itself was nicely decorated and quite spacious and did not smell of smoke! There were two queen size beds, a table with two chairs, a dressboy and a wardrobe. Furthermore there's a desk with a kettle with cups and even tea bags; a hairdryer and a flashlight and a large flatscreen tv.
The bathroom was the most spacious we had so far on this China trip and had a nice large walk-in shower with a large rain-showerhead. There were plenty of toiletries too and even a hairbrush. No need to bring anything from home.
But later on in the stay, a terrible stench came from the bathroom. There is clearly a big sewer problem. Even keeping the bathroom door closed did not prevent this stench from coming into the room. It got better after leaving the water running for a few minutes, but it quickly came back again. Luckily I brought a deo spray!
Opening the windows to get rid of the smell, we discovered the windows were not closing properly and the window pains inside have not been cleaned for ages. Clearly the room is only clean at first sight.
The hotel is linked to the hot springs, a few hundred meters further up the road. This is a really nice facility which I'll discuss in another review. Staying at the hotel, there's a discount on the hot spring facilities.
Next to the lobby is a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We had dinner on the day of arrival, which was not bad, but rather expensive. We had fried rice, cabbage and mushrooms and something that looked like schnitzel, but cut in tiny pieces. The service was rather quick but not friendly at all.
Breakfast is another story. The breakfast room is much too small to sit all guests and we had to wait more than ten minutes to find a vacant table. As it was nice weather, we could sit outside on the terras. There's a buffet with Asian food and for western tourists there is toast with jam.
The coffee was cold and the orange juice was warm; not just luke warm but really warm as in prepared with boiling water!
Milk was very watery and barely drinkable at all. There was fruit but by the time I got there it was finished and not refilled.
A cook is frying eggs, but some guests though it necessary to have eggs baked for their entire table of six or eight while only one of them was waiting in line. That way it took forever to get served. Same at the toaster, the Chinese guests easily toasted half a bread till there was nothing left. In the end I just went to get my own muesli from upstairs in order to get something to eat. This hotel seems to attrack a different class of local tourists that have illusions of being the VIP's there.
There's free wifi at the lobby that works rather well, but the lobby needs to be shared with dozens of Chinese smoking like chimneys.
So yes, this is a nice looking facility and the room has much more than just a bed, but I'd consider the no-star hotel where we staid 2 days ago much better value!
