Hiking Besseggen mountain ridge (Jotunheimen) Jul 14, 2008
There are many beautiful viewpoints in the Jotunheimen mountain area. I like this particular one best!
The Besseggen (aka "Besseggi") mountain rige is located between the 18 kilometer long lake Gjende and the smaller lake Bessvatnet. Hike up the ridge and proceed to the western end of the ridge. There you will have a fantastic view over the two lakes and the Jotunheimen mountain area. There are two unique aspects about the lakes. Gjende lake has an emerald green color whereas Bessvatnet is colored dark blue. Furthermore there is a 400 meter "drop" between the lakes. The ridge is only 50 meters wide! It is not a coincidence that Norways most frequently executed mountain hike includes the Besseggen ridge. You start at Gjendesheim, hike up the ridge and proceed to the western end passing the highest point (1743 meter). Then hike down to the "strip" between the two lakes and walk on to Memurubu hut. There you can take a ferry back to Gjendesheim - or walk along the lakeshore. It is also popular to do this hike the other way round (starting with the ferry to Memurubu). When you like hiking this is a must-do on sunny days! Please note: The path is steep in some areas but in very good condition. Map: http://www.besseggen.net/engelsk/besseggenA.htm

We wanted to walk from Memurubu, over Besseggen, to Gjendesheim. It's possible to go the other way to, but if you have troubles with your knees like me, it's not recommended. Climing DOWN Besseggen instead op UP can be really hard bon a jumper's knee...
So, the first ferry… Hoping for the sun to show... |
