Old Squares Feb 22, 2018
You can see construction sites almost everywhere in Kiev now. Even in the Old City, brand new apartment houses are being built and put into operation. I would not call those apartments very cheap. There are completed construction projects around Bessarabian Square. This square is at the end of Khreshchatyk, the central street.

Now there is an impressive shopping mall under this square. It is called "Metrograd". It is a huge complex with numerous cafes and bistros. Please take a look at:

Bessarabian Square is an old city square located between several streets: Khreshchatyk, Basseyna Street, Velyka Vassylkivska Street, Shevchenko Boulevard and Steep Descent.

There was a post station in this square two hundred years ago. The square was called Bessarabian because many farmers from southern Black Sea provinces used to trade at the market located here. According to another version of the origin of the name, the square was called after the old nickname of that area: Bessarabka. The 19th-centiry Kyivites called the area so because it used to be the home for local "stiffs" - homeless people - whose nickname was "Bessarabians".

The present market building is one of the oldest in the city. It was built in 1910-1912 and dedicated on July 16, 1912. It is recognized as an important architectural landmark of the capital.

This is how you can get to Bessarabian Square: from Leo Tolstoy ("Ploshcha Lva Tolstogo" in UKrainian) metro station walk along Velyka Vassylkivska Street towards the intersection with Taras Shevchenko Boulevard (at the corner of Basseina Street, Khreshchatyk and Velyka Vassylkivska Street), or go down Khreshchatyk Street to the Bessarabian Market.
