Besalu Vacation Guide

Besalú is a small medieval town in the "la Garrotxa" zone (province of Girona), in Catalunya. Situated where the Fluvià and Capellades rivers meet, it is about an hour’s drive north of Barcelona and is about a half hour from Girona. A stroll down the well preserved streets of this beautiful town is like travelling back in time. The silhouette of the town is striking and the first monument you will see is the medieval bridge leading to the town, which was first built in the 11th and 12th centuries.
After crossing the bridge, the first part of the town you enter is where the “Call” or Jewish neighborhood was located. Not much of it remains as is originally was, but the Jewish community was important here in the middle ages.
The entire town is peaceful and quiet (except when many tourist busses arrive!). I recommend exploring the whole town, paying special attention to the Carrer Major with beautiful manor houses and Plaça Major where the town hall and tourism office are located. The Church of St. Vincent from the 10th century should not be missed either.
