amazing Cathedral May 26, 2012
one of the most beautiful building in Berlin, grand and amazing cathedral.

Berliner Dom is the colloquial name for the Evangelical (i.e. Protestant) Oberpfarr- und Domkirche (English analogously: Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church, literally Supreme Parish and Cathedral Church) The Berlin Cathedral has never been a cathedral in the actual sense of that term since it has never been the seat of a bishop. The bishop of the Evangelical Church.

Prepare to be wowed Jan 10, 2011
The opulence is mind-boggling. It only costs a few euros, so take the time to go, sit inside and stare up at the ceiling for a while. You won't be disappointed (unless, perhaps, you've been traveling around Europe for a while and you're tired of looking at ornate churches). When you're ready, climb the stairs to the top and and be rewarded with some of the best views in Berlin. Visits usually end with a visit to the basement to see equally opulent sarcophagi of the royals, and the requisite gift shop.

Berliner Dom, East Berlin, Germany Feb 12, 2010
Today costs 5 Euros. When I went though, the Mark was being used and it cost even less to visit.

(Visiting this beautiful place was significantly interesting to me also since my father was born in East Berlin. I was born in West Berlin. We both immigrated to the US years ago. My 1st time visiting East Berlin was when The Wall was still up and we had to take a bus through East Berlin to visit family again in West Berlin, until they later moved to Hamburg--that time Communists stopped my father with an American Green Card, which the soldiers had a hard time reading and came onto our bus at Checkpoint, but only in the end luckily made him pay a fee--we were afraid they'd hold him there. The 2nd time I visited was right after The Wall came down, and that time I was here to see Der Berliner Dom...)

--it is a beautiful cathedral, first built in the 1400s. Today it is their largest church, and a "Must-See" if you're visiting the eastern side of what is all-around now known as simply, "Berlin"... of course, it is still the East side though. ;)
