Step Back in Time to a post-war, divided Europe Sep 08, 2013
One of the great things about Melbourne is all the kooky, themed, off-the-beaten track bars, cafes and restaurants you can find if you set your mind to it - and Berlin epitomises this perfectly. Nestled in a cosy little alleyway off Chinatown's Little Bourke Street, it takes a little wandering to discover this European-themed bar at the other side of the world from the city that inspired it and decades from the theme date.

Berlin bar is based on the iconic era of post-war, divided Europe, in particular, Berlin. The bar is divided into two rooms - like the famous city once was -, one representing Western Berlin and the other decorated to feel like Eastern Berlin. The Western Berlin room is dark and sensual, yet radiates indulgence and richness. It is reminiscent of a West Berlin ostentatious, pretentious parlour with private booths and white leather poufs. This area is even more old-school flashy when compared against the Eastern Berlin room, which is adjacent. You enter this room under a classical 'Achtung - You are now entering the Soviet Zone' sign, representing Checkpoint Charlie. This room contains former Soviet-controlled East Germany posters and art with a mock barbed-wire adorned 'Berlin wall' in the corner. It's a lot more humble and simple but with a similarly reminiscent, dark, sultry feel about the place.

There is an emphasis on good customer service, made obvious by the table service they make available. One must ring the doorbell before entering and be welcomed inside by a courteous staff member.

They offer wines, beers and cocktails.

We enjoyed our experience here but i thought maybe they could have had a bit more informative pieces around for the people who are not as knowledgeable about their European history.

Berlin @ Inner Melbourne Aug 07, 2011
This bar is just amazing! The decoration is perfect, very peculiar, and if you have ever been to Berlin or if you know the history of Berlin and the Wall you will find that it pictures it in the best way possible.

Every detail is impressive. In most bars in Berlin you have to ring a bell to get the door opened for you. So, guess what? :) And that's for starters.

When you get in you'll enter West Berlin! The decoration is luxurious and stylish, you can choose to sit there (but not before you get a peek at the other side!) and don't worry, the prices are the same on both sides.

To your right you'll find the bar and "Check Point Charlie", separating East and West Sides! Remember to watch for the details... THE WALL. When you cross the wall you'll get to East Berlin. The decoration is just delightful. There are beds as seats and bathtubs as tables...

You can sit there for three hours and still notice new details. That's what happened to me! The atmosphere is great! Even the waiters are dressed up for the occasion.

With the East and West sides so different, this bar will serve any occasion. Even with a full house it does not get very loud and the service is great. If you're looking for something chic you want to stay on the West side and if you're looking for something more peculiar you want to stay on the East side. :)

It is a bit expensive, you'll pay $19 for a cocktail and $10-$12 for a large beer. But the experience is totally worth it.

It is located in the inner city, so it should be easy to get there and find it. Either by train or tram you can expect a 5 min walk maximum.
