We have stayed at the Berkley Manor Bed & Breakfast 3 times before they apparently closed after a hurricane hit the Outer Banks of North Carolina in recent years. The owners, Robert and Amy Attaway, were some of the nicest people you could meet and were great breakfast cooks!
The Berkley Manor B&B is one of the three historic hunting lodges built but the same mainland entrepreneur. He hired the fishermen of Ocracoke to unload the ships full of white pine lumber to build his hunting lodges, and there are fingerprints from the fish oil on the hands of the fishermen on many of the boards used in the construction of these historic buildings. The breakfasts were great and we really enjoyed the company of the owners and the other guests every time we stayed there. Jenny and I would take a bottle of wine up to the widow's watch tower in the main building to watch the beautiful Outer Banks sunsets. We also enjoyed the fact that (especially on our first visit after completing my 350-page Masters thesis) there is no TV, no pets, no phone and no kids allowed in the rooms. A central phone is under the main stairs for calling in reservations at the local places for dinner. Twice we had the larger room with the jacuzzi tub and the beds were very comfortable. There are board games to play in the lobby on rainy days and free bicycles to borrow to explore the Island of Ocracoke when the weather permits. If the owners re-open the Berkley Manor B&B, which still required repairs during our last visit to Ocracoke in August 2007, this is the best place to stay on this relaxing and historic island of the North Carolina Outer Banks!
