Benihana Teppanyaki and Sushi at Al-Bustan Rotana Apr 08, 2013
If you've been to Benihana, you keep coming back every few months for the food AND the experience. Sounds like an excerpt from a Marketing textbook but it's true.
If you've been there, isn't it wonderful? if not - then read on...
Walk in alone or as a group - you might have to wait if you arrive after 9pm - as it can get crowded. Best to make reservations.
You will be seated at a teppanyaki table. The chef will arrive eventually but in the meantime you can enjoy drinks and conversation. The setup is such that you can't avoid making conversation with people seated near you - and that's part of the experience.
I ordered a combination with steak, shrimp and vegetables.
The chef starts with switching on the grill, cleaning it a bit. Then he introduces himself, and pours baby oil (cooking oil) on the grill. Then he puts a piece of japanese mango ice cream (butter) on the grill. Then starts placing the meat and shrimp on the grill, and gets a bit clever, juggling his instruments. I asked him if he ever missed a catch, he missed one deliberately and said 'definitely'. Then came the vegetables - long slices of light green zucchini, and some sprouts. Then the rice. There was an option of getting the fried garlic, which is fantastic - make sure you brush and floss later, but enjoy for now.
Eventually all the food makes its way to your plate, and you get 2 special distinct sauces with it.
1. Tahina sauce with Mustard (Amaaaazing with steak)
2. onion, ginger, carrot sauce (Amaaaazing with shrimp)
I think I've said enough - now time for you to go there for yourself ;)
