Bend is the largest town in Central Oregon, with a population of 75,000, and is the hub of all outdoor activities for the area.

Bend is situated on the Deschutes river which runs through town seperating the west side from the east. Downtown Bend has boutique shops and retauarants. The Old Mill Shopping area has more shopping opportunities.

Bend sits at an elevation of 3,500 feet on the eastern edge of the Cascade range. To the east of town is the high desert coutry of sagebrush and juniper trees. Bend has cold winters with occasional snow storms and hot sunny days in the summer.

There are numerous hotels and motels in town as well as destination resorts and lots of golf courses.

Outdoor activities are the main draw for visitors (and residents as well) to Bend. The nearby Deschutes National Forest has numerous hiking and camping opportunities in the summer and in the winter alpiine skiing at Mount Bachelor Ski Area and cross country skiing and snowshoeing at the several sno-parks along the road heading to Mount Bachelor.

These pictures are actually taken across the highway looking at Sparks Lake. Sparks Lake is about 25 miles west of Bend. We played around and hiked a bit. Got freaked out by some growling noises in the woods and the giant bees and had to evacuate!! Sparks Lake is an awesome place though to play in the water and/or camp. Last time I camped out there our camp groung was about a 45 minute canoe ride from the loading dock. Every view there is simply breathtaking.

We had a fully handicapped room right behind the lobby in Oakridge, Oregon.  Larger room with wider doors and even a no step in shower, which was very large and had a hand held shower and a chair that was attached to the wall and folded down if you needed it.  We didn’t but the hand held was nice to be able to use.  Breakfast, although they don’t say it is expanded, offered hot oatmeal, and even biscuits and country gravy.  We were delighted.   We were out and o...

I drove to Oregon from the east coast of the USA almost five years ago to take a look around, and I’ve been here ever since. I make frequent trips to the little city of Bend, Oregon, on the banks of the Deschutes River. Bend is about 35 miles away from the little Central Oregon town where I’m currently living.
