Ben and Bill's Chocolate Emporium Bar Harbor Reviews
Lobster Ice Cream! Jun 12, 2010
There are many special treats available at this sweet shop in the heart of down town Bar Harbor. They are located on Main where it intersects with Cottage Street, but you only need to scout for the giant lobster holding an ice cream cone. Inside is a wide variety of delectable handmade chocolates and ice creams, most notably their famous lobster ice cream!
Ben and Bill’s is a legitimate New England success story. The operation was started up in Cape Cod by Ben and Bill’s aunt and uncle in the 1950’s (they bought the business in 1988 and re-named it). Originally limited to candies, their success led to additional stores being opened in Massachusetts (operated during summer months), and a pair in Florida (open during the winter months). Homemade ice cream was introduced in the early 1980’s and added to the legacy.
The Bar Harbor location is the only one I’ve been to, but I can vouch that their sugar-free chocolates are top shelf and they have the broadest variety I’ve ever seen. The lobster ice cream is the motivation for adding this review, but you have a choice: the Bar Harbor shop boasts 64 ice cream flavors (in addition to a dozen gelato varieties). The service is quite friendly and they won’t hesitate to offer you a free taste of the lobster ice cream. Unfortunately I had to pass and my wife and daughter were not sufficiently intrigued to try a sample. It has received some rave reviews, so if you ever find yourself in Bar Harbor, I suggest ducking into Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium for something different and uniquely New England.
